Week 25, Day 6

SOME SILENCE MEANS cessation of speech. Another silence means cessation of thought. That silence arrives together with the most hidden, beautiful, and exalted thought.

—RABBI ABRAHAM ISAAC KOOK (1865–1935)

PHRASE Wisdom walks through the door of silence.

PRACTICE Find at least ten minutes every day when you will be silent and seek inner stillness.

Week 25, Day 7

OUR SAGES SAID that observance of the commandments and teachings are not enough to counterbalance what comes out of a person’s mouth. “What should be a person’s pursuit in this world? He should be silent” (Talmud, Chullin 89a). One must seal his lips as tight as two millstones.

—THE VILNA GAON (1720–1797)

PHRASE Wisdom walks through the door of silence.

PRACTICE Find at least ten minutes every day when you will be silent and seek inner stillness.
